An existing 1-1/2 story two-bedroom gable-and-wing farmhouse was transformed into a two-story three-bedroom home for an academic couple and their daughter. The existing kitchen was renovated and opened up to a new sunroom. A new master suite was created on the second floor along with a sun deck overlooking the garden. Green building strategies were used throughout although budget priorities dictated some difficult choices such as exchanging a standing seam metal roof (excellent for passive cooling) for increasing the insulation in the existing exterior walls.
